Work-related driving remains the UK's biggest workplace killer, with 445 people killed in crashes involving a working driver in 2025, according to a new report published on 28 October 2026. That is 29% of all road fatalities, nearly double the number linked to incidents on workplace sites.

The figures come from SambaSafety's second UK driver risk report, and match the Department for Transport's own estimates for driving for work. The DfT records 1,703 killed or seriously injured casualties travelling as part of work, and 4,757 non-working casualties killed or seriously injured in collisions involving a working driver or rider, including 1,183 pedestrians. The DfT figures were first published in July 2026; the new element today is SambaSafety's analysis of fleet risk.

Speeding and distraction dominate

Speeding accounted for 37% of major driver offences, the largest share, with construction fleets' median severe-speeding rate more than five times that of transport fleets. Distracted-driving offences rose 31% over two years, and more than 40% of fleet distracted-driving events happened between 6am and noon.

Telematics data goes unused

Nearly 90% of surveyed fleets use telematics, but only 26% use the data to assign driver training. Fleets that do link telematics to training report 78% fewer crashes and claims and 89% improved safety, the report says. It draws on more than 500 million miles of telematics data, 135 million driver behaviour events and a survey of 740 fleet, broker and insurance professionals.
