The House of Commons Home Affairs Committee is asking employers, academics and organisations with experience of labour migration to submit written evidence on work-based immigration to the UK, with a deadline of 27 October 2026.

The inquiry, opened on 15 September 2026, looks at how migration policy connects to skills and training policy, and what role migration should play in tackling UK labour shortages. It asks whether employers are investing enough in training UK residents, and what mechanisms the Home Office could use to encourage domestic recruitment over reliance on migrant labour.

Evidence is also sought on salary thresholds, shortage lists and visa eligibility, including how the Temporary Shortage List is working for sectors such as social care, and how sponsorship and compliance are handled.

This is an inquiry, not a rule change. It changes no visa rule today, and any change that follows would come later through new Immigration Rules. Anyone planning an application should check the current rules on the official GOV.UK pages before applying.
