US strike kills five on Pacific drug boat claim

The United States military has said five people were killed in a strike on a vessel in the Eastern Pacific on Tuesday 27 October. US Southern Command said it carried out what it described as a lethal, kinetic strike on a go-fast vessel travelling along established drug-trafficking routes. It said the vessel was involved in drug trafficking on the basis of confirmed intelligence, but it published no further detail about that assessment, and it did not name the people killed or give the vessel’s origin or destination.

The latest strike in a contested campaign

The strike is the latest in a series of US attacks on boats in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific since September 2025, which Washington presents as action against people it describes as narco-terrorists. Reuters put the death toll from those strikes at more than 230 people, while other tallies cited in coverage differ slightly — one count put the total at 243 after this strike, based on an earlier count of 238 deaths in 68 strikes. The exact strike count is therefore disputed even though the scale of the campaign is not.

Criticism and what remains undisclosed

Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and independent United Nations experts have described the strikes as unlawful extrajudicial killings, and the American Civil Liberties Union has described the administration’s claims about the people targeted as unsubstantiated. The administration has said the vessels it has struck were transporting narcotics. No independent party has verified this latest strike, and no evidence that this vessel was carrying drugs has been published, so the trafficking allegation in this article is attributed to Southern Command rather than stated as an established fact.
