Vietnam Braces for Heavy Rain in Central Provinces

Days of downpours forecast for central Vietnam

Central Vietnam is bracing for several days of heavy rain from Monday, 9 November, with the national weather agency warning of flooding, flash floods and landslides. The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said in its 9am bulletin on Saturday, 7 November, that widespread heavy rain would fall across the central region through the night of Wednesday, 11 November.

Huế, Đà Nẵng and eastern Quảng Ngãi could receive 250–450mm over the three days, with isolated locations potentially exceeding 700mm. The agency also warned some areas could see more than 100mm within three hours, sharply raising flash-flood and landslide risks.

Da Nang bears the brunt: more than 150mm is forecast on Monday, 9 November, and more than 200mm on each of Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs around 27°C.

Cold front drives the wet spell

The rain is being driven by a strong cold front moving down from the north, combined with an easterly wind disturbance over the central coast. Northern Vietnam will also turn colder and wetter, with rain forecast from Saturday through Monday before sunshine returns on Tuesday. Hanoi's high on Monday is forecast at just 24°C, while Ho Chi Minh City should stay mostly sunny and reach 34°C.

The wet weather is not confined to Vietnam. Southern Thailand is preparing for heavy to very heavy rain between 7 and 9 November, and five nature trails in Khao Banthat Wildlife Sanctuary remain under an official closure order. In the Philippines, the weather bureau PAGASA issued a thunderstorm advisory on Saturday morning for parts of Bohol.

Residents and travellers in central Vietnam should watch official updates closely, avoid forest trails and river crossings during the heaviest rain, and be ready to move away from flood-prone areas if local authorities issue evacuation guidance.
