Zelensky Warns Trump's Europe-Russia Security Deal Could Be 'Dangerous'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that US President Donald Trump's proposed security agreement with Russia, potentially covering all of Europe, could be dangerous if it precedes an end to the war in Ukraine.

"For me, it's not simple and it can be dangerous," Zelensky told CNN's Jake Tapper on Friday, adding that ending the war must come first and security guarantees second.

Trump floated the idea on Thursday after meeting Kirill Dmitriev, President Vladimir Putin's envoy. "It's going to be a big agreement... It's going to involve more than Ukraine, and I could even say it might involve all of Europe," Trump told reporters, without giving details.

Zelensky said he learned of the proposal in a phone call on Thursday with Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, ahead of US-mediated talks between Russia and Ukraine in Abu Dhabi next week.

'We don't want Yalta 2.0'

Kushner has since said Washington is working on a broader European security framework to address the security concerns of all sides. He made no mention of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Zelensky warned the framework could divide the continent into spheres of influence. "We don't want to have Yalta 2.0," he said, referring to the 1945 conference at which Allied leaders discussed Europe's postwar order. "We don't want to be divided by Russia."

He said the framework posed an even greater threat to the EU, noting Ukraine is not an EU or NATO member. He also rejected giving up territory: "We are not ready to leave Donbas, to give our territory."

Zelensky said Ukraine would support a full ceasefire or a limited truce covering energy or maritime operations, but Moscow had offered no signs of readiness. US, Ukrainian and Russian representatives are due to meet in Abu Dhabi on 10–11 November.
