Adeboye Ordered Refund of Illicit Billions, EFCC Reveals

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), ordered the refund of billions of naira donated to a church project within 24 hours after investigators traced the money to the proceeds of financial crime. The disclosure was made by the chairman of Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, while addressing RCCG workers in the early hours of Saturday, ahead of the church's annual Holy Ghost Congress.
According to Olukoyede, a member of the church had donated billions of naira towards an RCCG project, but EFCC investigations later established that the funds were linked to financial crime. Once the church was alerted, Adeboye directed that the entire donation be returned. The EFCC chairman quoted the cleric as telling church officials: "I give you 24 hours." The money was subsequently returned to the government. Neither the identity of the donor, the exact amount involved nor the specific project has been disclosed, and the suspect's wider transactions were said to run into tens of billions of naira.
Olukoyede, who was invited by Adeboye to speak to church workers on financial propriety and transparent record-keeping, commended the cleric's swift response as an example of integrity. He also recounted a contrasting case involving a different church implicated in a Ponzi scheme, whose leader only refunded the money when the commission was ready to file charges.
The EFCC chairman warned pastors against accepting donations without first establishing how donors earn their living, and against unbridled materialism and leadership tussles. Adeboye, in his response, said the church would not shield anyone found in a financially compromising position and urged pastors to keep their financial records clean. Church Times Nigeria first reported the disclosure.
