Three killed in Mogadishu eviction clashes

At least three civilians were killed in Mogadishu on Sunday after security forces opened fire during protests against house demolitions in the capital's Dayniile district, according to Somali media reports. Several other people were reported wounded in the confrontation.
Residents had gathered to protest against forced evictions and the destruction of homes in the Warlaaliska neighbourhood when the shooting happened, FTL Somalia reported. Former prime minister Hassan Ali Khaire condemned the deaths and accused government security forces of using excessive force against residents defending their homes.
Khaire said the administration of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud bore full responsibility for the loss of life and claimed the order behind the killings had come from the country's top leadership. He did not provide evidence to support that allegation, and the government had not commented on the incident at the time of reporting.
Dayniile has become the centre of repeated and deadly confrontations over evictions in Mogadishu. Heavy fighting broke out in Warlaaliska in May 2026 when security forces moved to demolish homes there, and further clashes in the Tookiyo neighbourhood of Yaqshiid district in August left nearly 10 people injured.
The dispute sits inside a much wider eviction crisis. A Heritage Institute for Policy Studies report published in October 2026 found that more than 2.1 million people were evicted across Somalia between 2017 and September 2026, with 64 percent of those evictions taking place in the Benadir region, which includes the capital.
