Apple says 100,000 apps now built for iPhone Duo

Apple says well over 100,000 apps built for the iPhone Duo are now live on the App Store, two weeks after its first foldable phone went on sale. The company says thousands more optimised apps are being added every day.

The milestone answers the loudest complaint in the launch reviews. When the Duo went on sale on 23 October, reviewers praised the hardware but criticised how few apps used the folding display. Apps that had not been updated for the Duo ran with a black bar along one side of the screen, and some controls were buried inside overflow menus.

Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, gave the figure in a statement to 9to5Mac. “Today there are well over 100,000 apps built for iPhone Duo already live on the App Store, and thousands of optimized apps are being added to the store each day,” she said. “It’s been wonderful to see how quickly developers have embraced iPhone Duo, and we’re grateful for their creativity and innovation.”

An app counts as built for the Duo when it is made with the iOS 27.1 software development kit or later, filling the full width of both displays and moving its vertical controls into the status bar area. Those apps carry a “Made for iPhone Duo” badge on their App Store page, and Apple is promoting them in editorial collections such as “Popular Apps on iPhone Duo”.

Apple paired the announcement with a fresh wave of notable Duo-ready apps, including Microsoft Word and Outlook, Zoom, the NBA and NHL apps, shopping apps Etsy and LTK, productivity apps Goodnotes and Extra, and the Halide Mark III camera app. Apple also lists Spotify, CBS, Tubi, BBC iPlayer, Yahoo Fantasy Sports, Facebook Messenger, Google Chat, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva, Tinder, Google Translate, Strava, Tesla Robotaxi, Domino’s and Taco Bell among the apps updated for iOS 27 and the Duo.

Not every update has reached phones yet. TechCrunch reported that Spotify was still showing the black bar on its Duo review unit, with no update listed in the App Store. MacRumors published a same-day list of 41 apps still not optimised for the foldable, including DoorDash, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, Microsoft Teams, Starbucks, Venmo, PayPal, Uber Eats and Duolingo. Apple says the updates are coming, but for now some of the most-used apps on any phone still do not use the bigger display.

The app count is only half the story for buyers. The Duo, which starts at $1,999 for the 256GB model, sold out within hours of orders opening, and shipping times have slipped into next year. Apple said on its earnings call this week that it is “hard to predict” when the supply constraints behind the delays will ease.

Apple says thousands of developers have joined its Duo workshops in 19 cities around the world in the past month, and Prescott said the company expects the pace of app updates to keep accelerating. The app complaint that dominated the launch reviews is fading on schedule; the wait for the phone itself is not.
