Balochistan journalists mark Black Day over layoffs and unpaid pay

By The Daily Byte ·05 Nov 2026 ·2 min read
Quetta city in Balochistan, Pakistan.

Journalists in Balochistan observed Black Day on Tuesday 3 November 2026, marking the 3 November 2007 emergency and protesting forced dismissals, the shutdown of media bureau offices in the province, and the non-payment or delayed payment of salaries. The observance was reported on Wednesday 4 November.

The protest was held at the call of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists. Journalists wore black armbands, hoisted black flags at press clubs and held protests, including a sit-in outside Quetta Press Club organised by the Balochistan Union of Journalists, according to the reports.

Union claims and a press-freedom report

Union leaders claimed around 10 television channels had closed bureau offices in Balochistan, leaving about 150 journalists and media workers unemployed. Those figures are union claims and could not be independently verified in the reports checked, so they are attributed here rather than stated as fact. Journalists also opposed restrictions under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).

Freedom Network's Impunity Report 2026 documented 97 violations against media and practitioners from October 2025 to August 2026, down from 142 in the preceding cycle, including one work-related killing, three attempted assassinations, 18 murder or harm threats and 11 assaults.
