Bavarian Nordic donates 75,000 mpox doses to stockpile

Danish vaccine maker Bavarian Nordic will donate 75,000 doses of its MVA-BN vaccine to a newly established global mpox emergency stockpile, the company announced on 27 October 2026. The donation is intended to strengthen preparedness against future mpox outbreaks by ensuring doses are available when and where they are needed.
The donation comes on top of a newly awarded contract to supply a further 150,000 doses to the same stockpile. The stockpile is managed by the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision, a mechanism hosted by the World Health Organization that coordinates the allocation and deployment of emergency vaccine supplies to countries responding to outbreaks.
Why a stockpile matters
Mpox is a viral disease that causes fever and skin lesions and spreads through close physical contact. A standing emergency stockpile is designed to allow faster, more equitable access to vaccines during an outbreak, rather than relying on ad hoc supply arrangements after cases have already spread.
Bavarian Nordic said the establishment of the stockpile was an important milestone in strengthening preparedness for future outbreaks. Initial funding for the stockpile has been provided by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, according to the company's announcement.
