BBC Reveals Black Sky Plan for Total UK Blackout

The BBC has revealed details of its contingency plan for a "Black Sky" event — a catastrophic, prolonged failure of the national electricity grid that would also take down water supplies, shops, cash machines and communications. According to reporting by the BBC's media and arts correspondent David Sillito, published on Saturday, about 100 BBC staff are designated to run a small emergency radio studio if the grid collapses completely.

The studio would operate on secure communication lines that do not depend on the internet, with stocks of fuel, water and food to keep it running for at least three days without resupply. Its job would be to broadcast pre-arranged government messages to the public over FM radio. Transmitters would run on diesel generators, and the plan assumes power could be restored within two to three days in many scenarios.

The BBC's reporting recalls the flooding in Lancaster in December 2015, when 61,500 people lost power after the River Lune burst its banks, and the mass blackout across Spain and Portugal in April 2025, which sharpened official focus on grid vulnerability. The government has also been urging households to prepare through its Be Ready campaign, advising three days of water, food, cash, a torch and a wind-up or battery FM radio, and is investing £70 million in high-altitude aircraft that could restore mobile and internet coverage.

Officials stress there is no specific threat to the electricity grid, which has never suffered a complete nationwide outage in its 75-year history. The Cabinet Office told the BBC the UK has one of the most resilient electricity systems in the world. The figures for staff and supplies come from internal briefings rather than a published document, so they should be read as reported estimates, not official guarantees.
