Binance to close EU accounts on 31 December over MiCA

Binance has told customers in several European countries to withdraw their crypto before monthly fees begin on 29 November, with their accounts set to close on 31 December 2026.

The exchange has emailed users in France, Spain, Italy and Poland, telling them to withdraw their crypto and fiat balances. Deposits have been blocked, but customers can still withdraw. A Binance spokesperson confirmed to CoinDesk that the exchange is progressively restricting certain services for affected users following the end of the transition period under the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) rules.

Fees before closure

From 29 November, accounts that still hold assets will be charged a monthly fee of 0.025 percent of the balance or 10 USDC, whichever is higher. The first deduction will take place within three days of 29 November, followed by a second charge after 24 December. "Affected accounts will be closed with effect from 31 December 2026," the spokesperson said, describing the process as carefully managed.

Why Binance is pulling back

MiCA requires crypto exchanges to secure authorisation in an EU member state to serve customers across the bloc. The transition period ended on 30 June 2026, and Binance withdrew its application for a Greek MiCA licence in June, saying it planned to seek approval in another EU member state, which it has yet to name. France's financial regulator lists Binance France's registration, held since May 2022, as having lapsed automatically on 2 July.

Binance first contacted users in the four countries in June, urging them to withdraw. The exchange says its commitment to Europe remains unchanged and that it is confident it will secure a licence in the coming months, but it does not appear in the European Securities and Markets Authority's register of authorised crypto providers.
