Birmingham Votes to Review Israel-Linked Investments

By The Daily Byte ·07 Nov 2026 ·2 min read
Birmingham City Council House

Birmingham City Council has voted to review its financial investments linked to Israel, in a move that could ultimately lead to money being withdrawn on human rights grounds. Councillors backed the motion by 54 votes to 19 at a meeting on Tuesday, 3 November. The motion calls for a six-month review of investments held by the council and the West Midlands Pension Fund, with possible outcomes including engagement with companies, exclusion from portfolios or full divestment. The vote does not mean any money has been withdrawn immediately; it starts a formal process to examine the links and decide what action could lawfully be taken.

What the review will cover

The motion was proposed by independent councillor Nosheen Khalid, the council's cabinet member for health and social care. It asks the council to write to other local authorities on the West Midlands Pension Fund Pensions Committee to set up a time-limited cross-authority task group, and for Birmingham's representative on the committee to seek a transparent review of relevant investments, including pooled funds and external asset managers. The council will also review its banking relationships with a view to strengthening ethical, environmental and social considerations. Cllr Khalid said: "Where money goes, responsibility follows." There were cheers from some councillors when the motion was carried.

Opposition and next steps

The move drew opposition before the vote. UK Lawyers for Israel had called for the motion to be withdrawn or postponed, arguing that it raised legal and equality concerns and that procurement law could restrict politically motivated boycotts. The group also said pension fund decisions must be made in the financial interests of members and beneficiaries. Jewish organisations warned the move risked fuelling antisemitism. Attention now turns to whether the review results in any investments being excluded or withdrawn.
