Bitcoin tumbles below $76,000 as tech sell-off spreads

Bitcoin tumbled below $76,000 on Thursday as the sell-off in US technology stocks spread into crypto markets, with leveraged traders caught out as prices fell through the day.
Bitcoin fell from a peak of $81,105 on Wednesday to an intraday low of $75,468 on the Bitstamp exchange by 10:55 a.m. Eastern Time, Bitcoin.com reported. The token was trading near $76,200 by late morning, down about 5% on the day. Ether fell below $2,300 as the slide spread across digital assets.
Liquidations pile up
About $370 million of leveraged crypto positions were liquidated in about an hour as Bitcoin broke below $77,000 and Ether fell below $2,300, according to Bitcoin Magazine Pro, with most of the wiped-out positions held by traders betting on higher prices. The $75,000 level has held as support on several occasions since August, including on election night.
The fall came as Wall Street suffered its worst day in more than a year, with the Nasdaq dropping 5.52% and chip stocks plunging on fears of tighter regulation of the AI buildout after the Democrats' midterm election sweep. Crypto-related shares were hit hard too: Coinbase, Circle and BitGo fell between 10% and 15%, while Strategy dropped 9.6%.
Bitcoin has now given back its post-election rally and sits near its lowest level in seven weeks, according to market reports. No daily closing price is claimed here: the figures quoted are intraday levels from Thursday's session. Market moves are not investment advice.
