Bonfire Night displays axed as 23 events called off

Thousands of people marking Bonfire Night on Thursday 5 November face disappointment after a string of local fireworks displays were called off across the UK, with The Sun putting the total at 23 axed events. That figure is The Sun's own tally and is attributed to the paper here; it has not been independently verified.
Leeds City Council cancelled six celebrations in major public parks because of budget pressures, including Roundhay Park, which alone attracts 70,000 people, along with East End Park, Woodhouse Moor, Springhead Park, Middleton Park and Bramley Park. Truro City Council in Cornwall also scrapped its annual display, despite 5,000 people expected, after finding the event could not run safely within the available budget.
Closures, sewers and a 60-year tradition
Primrose Hill in London remains closed this evening over safety concerns from police, for another year. Broadstairs and St Peter's Town Council axed its Viking Bay fireworks after a collapsed sewer in the area, and the Heytesbury bonfire and fireworks display in Wiltshire was called off after 60 years for reasons organisers said were out of their control.
The free Light Up the Sky event in Corby, expected to draw 14,000 people as a memorial for four children who died this year, was also cancelled, as was the 30-year-old Woodchurch Connect display on the Wirral. Many displays are still going ahead, so readers should check with organisers before travelling.
