Bournemouth, Sunderland and Crystal Palace all booked places in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night, completing a dramatic fourth round alongside the two penalty shoot-out winners. Bournemouth recorded the night's biggest winning margin with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Vitality Stadium, their third successive 3-0 win, while Sunderland edged a five-goal contest against Brentford 3-2 at the Stadium of Light. Crystal Palace completed the trio with a narrow 1-0 away win at Fulham's Craven Cottage ground.

Bournemouth cruise, Sunderland survive a scare

Bournemouth led Aston Villa 1-0 at half-time before adding two more goals after the break, continuing a run of form that has also seen them keep five consecutive clean sheets. Sunderland's path was far less comfortable: they led Brentford 3-1 at the interval but had to withstand a second-half fightback before holding on for a 3-2 win. Both sides will now look to the quarter-final draw with genuine belief that a first major trophy is within reach this season.

Palace grind out an away win

Crystal Palace's victory was the tightest of the three, a single goal enough to settle a hard-fought tie at Craven Cottage and send the visitors through. Fulham, by contrast, leave the competition despite home advantage, while Brentford and Aston Villa also bow out after a night that underlined how little separates Premier League sides in knockout football. The three winners join Liverpool, Manchester City, Fleetwood Town and Bradford City in the last eight, with Everton against Newcastle still to decide the final place.
