Liverpool reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after beating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Anfield on 28 October. Chelsea took the lead in the 40th minute when Morgan Rogers scored from the penalty spot, but Cody Gakpo levelled from a spot kick of his own three minutes later. Neither side found a winner in normal time, so the fourth-round tie went straight to a shootout.

Shootout swings both ways

Both sides missed chances to settle the shootout early. Valentin Barco and Kostas Tsimikas both failed with efforts, before Ryan Gravenberch and Emmanuel Emegha also missed, keeping the contest level. Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili denied Emegha, and Joe Gomez then scored to put Liverpool in front in the shootout. Wesley Fofana then sent his kick over the bar, ending Chelsea's hopes and sending the home crowd into celebration.

Bournemouth await in last eight

The win booked Liverpool a home quarter-final against Bournemouth, with the draw made after Wednesday's ties. Match coverage noted it was Liverpool's fifth straight shootout win over Chelsea. Chelsea, meanwhile, left Anfield empty-handed despite leading at half-time, and their cup run ended in the fourth round. The match was watched by 60,214 supporters at Anfield, according to Liverpool's official match report.
