BP profit jumps to $8.46 billion as refining margins surge

The headline numbers
BP reported third-quarter 2026 underlying replacement cost profit, its version of net income, of $8.46 billion on Friday 30 October 2026. That beat the $7.33 billion expected in a company-provided poll of analysts, and compares with $2.2 billion a year earlier. BP's own results release puts underlying replacement cost profit at $8,458 million, against $5,732 million in the second quarter of 2026 and $2,210 million in the third quarter of 2025.
Operating cash flow in the third quarter was $14,829 million, up from $10,858 million in the second quarter and $7,786 million a year earlier. Net debt fell to $13,870 million at the end of the third quarter, from $22,251 million at the end of the second quarter and $26,054 million a year earlier.
What drove the beat
Refining was a key driver, with realised refining margins rising sharply, worth an estimated $1.9 billion to $2.1 billion quarter-on-quarter. Forecast impairments of $3 billion to $4.5 billion were excluded from underlying profit.
The announced dividend per ordinary share was 8.660 cents, unchanged from the second quarter of 2026 and up from 8.320 cents a year earlier.
The stronger quarter follows a weaker comparative period a year earlier, when underlying profit was sharply lower. BP's results also showed the balance sheet strengthening, with net debt down by more than $8 billion in a single quarter, giving the company more headroom as it continues to invest across its oil, gas and lower-carbon businesses.
