Four members of the same family, including a 13-year-old boy, have been named after a fire tore through their townhome in Chicago's Rogers Park neighbourhood in the early hours of Thursday, 5 November.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office named the victims as Mariza Garcia Jimenez, 48; her son Valentino Jozeph Vallejo, 13; her mother, Maria Piedad Jimenez de Garcia, 69; and her other son, Francisco Rey Vallejo, 24, the Dispatch Times reported.

Firefighters were called to the 7000 block of North Paulina Street at about 4.15am and found the four people unresponsive inside the home. They were taken to nearby hospitals and pronounced dead. The blaze was confined to one unit of a four-unit building and was brought under control by about 4.37am. Three people from neighbouring homes were forced to leave temporarily, and the family's dog also died.

The family had lived in the home since 2005, according to local reports, and smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher were present in the house. The 13-year-old was an eighth-grade pupil at Kilmer International Academy in the neighbourhood.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and no foul play is suspected, police said. Alderwoman Maria Hadden, who represents the area, said: "Our community lost an entire family in a tragic fire this morning," adding that the victims were beloved neighbours and cherished family to many in Rogers Park.
