Colombia Drone Attack Kills Three Soldiers at Army Base

A drone attack on a military base in northern Colombia killed three soldiers and injured at least eight on Saturday 7 November, Colombia's army said in a statement. Explosive-laden drones struck the military canton in Santa Rosa del Sur, a small town in the foothills of the San Lucas mountain range in the department of Bolivar.

The attack targeted the facilities of the Army's 48th Jungle Battalion around midday on Saturday, according to the Army's First Division, which confirmed that unmanned aircraft had been fitted with explosive devices. The Army reported three service members killed and eight seriously wounded. Video circulated on social media showed smoke pouring from the base after three blasts, as soldiers took cover in shelters built from sandbags.

No group blamed so far

Authorities have not said who carried out the attack, and no organisation had publicly claimed responsibility when the reports were filed. The surrounding region, rich in gold mines, has long been fought over by the National Liberation Army, the Gulf Clan and smaller factions led by former members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, but their presence is not evidence that any particular group carried out this strike.

President vows a forceful response

President Abelardo de la Espriella condemned the attack and vowed a forceful response. "Those who were behind this attack … will have nowhere to hide," he wrote on X on Saturday. Early reports differed on the casualty figures, with the town's mayor reporting a higher number of injured; this report uses the Army's confirmed figures of three killed and eight seriously wounded.
