Crowborough asylum camp use sought until 2030

What the application covers
An urgent Crown development application for Crowborough Training Camp was validated on 30 October 2026. The Home Office, as applicant, seeks full planning permission for the continued use of the camp on Uckfield Road, Crowborough, East Sussex, as non-detained asylum accommodation for up to 540 residents, for a temporary period until 22 January 2030. The proposal also covers retention of existing temporary infrastructure, including lighting towers, CCTV cameras, generators, modular ablution blocks, temporary kitchen units and security fencing.
The application is being handled through the urgent Crown development route, which allows the government to fast-track planning decisions for Crown land. Law360 reported on 30 October 2026 that the government had agreed to fast-track the application despite objections from a local council. The camp has previously been used under an existing Class Q permission, and the new application would extend that use rather than create a new site.
Why the decision matters
The case sits within the government’s wider effort to end the use of asylum hotels by moving people into alternative accommodation, including large sites and former military locations. Ministers have said hotel closures have already saved taxpayers more than £1 billion since the election, while critics of large-site accommodation argue about local impact and suitability. The Crowborough decision will therefore be watched by other areas where similar sites have been proposed.
No individual asylum decision is affected by this planning application, which concerns only the use of the site. Further details, including notifications to the local MP and the applicant, are published on the GOV.UK guidance page for the application.
