A drink driver who led police on a high-speed pursuit through Rochdale has been jailed for four years and five months after a pedestrian was left with life-changing injuries.

Cameron Grainger, 25, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court on Friday 6 November after being found guilty of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He has also been disqualified from driving for six years and two months.

The court heard that at around 1am on Sunday 19 November 2023, Grainger parked his Seat Leon in Rochdale town centre before spending almost three hours drinking in bars and pubs with three friends.

When police tried to stop Grainger as he left the town centre, he kept driving and a pursuit began. He drove at speed along Rochdale Road, with CCTV showing him driving on the wrong side of the road throughout the incident.

The pursuit ended when a 41-year-old pedestrian was struck by a police car as officers tried to bring Grainger to a stop. He suffered life-changing injuries. Grainger was arrested the following day and answered no comment in his police interview.

The court also heard that Grainger had been given an interim driving disqualification on Wednesday 30 September 2026, but was involved in another police pursuit in Rochdale on Monday 26 October, once again driving dangerously.

Detective Sergeant Louise Warhurst, of Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said the pedestrian's injuries had had a lasting effect on him and his family.

The court also ordered the destruction of the Seat Leon Grainger was driving in 2023. PC Sam Lockley, the officer driving the police car in that pursuit, later received a two-year suspended prison sentence.
