Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged US President Donald Trump to resolve tensions between the United States and Iran through diplomacy, telling him in a phone call on Saturday that Ankara will continue its peace efforts.

According to a statement from Turkey's presidency, Mr Erdogan told Mr Trump that the differences between Washington and Tehran should be settled through diplomatic channels and direct dialogue, and that military escalation in the Middle East must be avoided.

The two leaders also discussed the war in Ukraine, with Mr Erdogan expressing hope that intensified diplomatic efforts to end that conflict would produce results, and saying contacts with both Kyiv and Moscow should be stepped up. He thanked Mr Trump for his support for the recent summit of the Organization of Turkic States.

The Turkish presidency did not disclose Mr Trump's responses to the proposals and announced no specific agreements from the conversation.

The call came as Washington weighs whether to resume military operations against Iran after the war that began in late February. Mr Trump confirmed on Friday that US forces had carried out limited strikes on an Iranian air defence installation on Qeshm Island, while insisting his administration was "doing very well with Iran" and talking to Tehran.

Qatar has been mediating between the two sides, and Iran has sent Washington a nuclear proposal through Doha, though Tehran says formal talks cannot start until the United States meets seven conditions, including on sanctions and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Mr Erdogan's intervention adds Turkey to the list of regional leaders pressing Mr Trump to give diplomacy more time before any new round of strikes.
