Europeans to join Ukraine peace talks in Abu Dhabi

European countries will take part in US-mediated talks on Ukraine in Abu Dhabi next week, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has confirmed, ending weeks in which Europe was left outside the negotiating room.

"The Europeans will be well represented; France will be in Abu Dhabi to take part in these discussions," Barrot told French radio station RTL on Sunday. He did not say who would represent France, adding that he would not personally sit at the negotiating table, according to Reuters.

US envoy Steve Witkoff said on Monday that Washington would bring Ukrainian and Russian delegations together in Abu Dhabi on 10 and 11 November to discuss ending Moscow's war, post-war security agreements and de-escalation. Until now the talks had been presented as trilateral negotiations between Ukrainian, Russian and American officials.

Barrot said Europeans had made clear to the American mediators that no discussion about the future of the continent could ignore their expectations and demands, and that no agreement with consequences for the European security architecture could be designed or discussed without them. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had also pressed for Kyiv's European allies to be involved.

The announcement follows a meeting on Thursday between US President Donald Trump and Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, after which Trump predicted a "major agreement" with Russia on Ukraine. Barrot said he did not know what the US president had in mind.
