Strike on Gaza City university kills three staff as truce fails to stop the violence

An Israeli strike on a university in Gaza City killed three people on Sunday 25 October 2026, according to staff at the university and a local hospital, while Gaza's civil defence agency reported four other people killed elsewhere in the territory the same day.
What was reported
Al Shifa hospital said it received three bodies and treated eight wounded people after a drone strike in Gaza City. Two sources at the Islamic University said those killed were administrative staff and that the injured were students who had been present for classes. Gaza's education ministry condemned the strike and said the higher education sector faced “total annihilation”, with 95 per cent of academic buildings damaged during the war. It added that 10 students and educators had been killed by fire over the previous six days. The Israeli military said it was looking into the reports.
Four more deaths reported
Gaza civil defence spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said four other people were killed on Sunday: two in an airstrike in the southern city of Khan Yunis, one in central Deir al Balah and one in the north of the Strip. A separate account of the day's deaths names two brothers killed west of Khan Yunis, a 54-year-old killed near Hamad Hospital in north-west Gaza City, and a 33-year-old killed by a drone east of Deir al Balah — a pattern of scattered strikes rather than a single concentrated offensive.
A truce that has not held
A truce has been in effect in Gaza for over a year, but it has failed to completely halt the violence. Sunday's reports underline that distinction: a ceasefire on paper, and continued lethal strikes on the ground, including against places of learning where students were in class.
