Gold price today: near $4,000 an ounce after a sharp weekly fall

Gold price today, 25 October 2026
Gold traded near $3,996 per troy ounce on Sunday 25 October 2026 — about $128.48 per gram and $128,484 per kilogram. Gold closed at $3,995.81 on Friday 23 October, down 0.71 per cent from $4,024.51 at the previous close.
The weekly picture is weaker: gold fell 4.1 per cent over the past week and is down 8.5 per cent so far in 2026, sitting 26.1 per cent below its all-time closing high of $5,405 set on 29 January 2026, in a 52-week range of $3,948.50 to $5,405. Silver fell 1.27 per cent to $53.90, platinum fell 1.02 per cent to $1,550.50 and palladium fell 0.98 per cent to $1,042.10 at the Friday close.
Why gold fell despite war tensions
Gold usually rises in a crisis, but this week safe-haven flows were overwhelmed by selling pressure, according to market reports. Three forces pulled the other way: surging oil prices (Brent above $110-$116, WTI near $100) stoked inflation fears and higher-for-longer interest-rate expectations; markets priced a high chance of the US Federal Reserve holding rates at its 27-28 October meeting, with elevated odds of a December hike, keeping the opportunity cost of holding gold high; and a sell-off in AI and technology shares triggered stop-loss selling after gold broke below $4,065 and then $4,000.
Gold in pounds
For UK readers, gold traded at about £2,988 per troy ounce and £96.05 per gram at the same spot rate. A physical coin or bar costs more than spot — dealers add a premium for fabrication and certification, with small denominations carrying a higher percentage premium than kilo bars.
