Government and JI Agree Joint Fuel Relief Panel

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met a Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) delegation led by chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman in Islamabad on Tuesday 27 October 2026, with both sides agreeing to form a joint committee on petroleum relief and the petroleum levy. The decision was reported in a Prime Minister's Office statement.
A six-member panel
The committee will have six members, three from the government and three from JI. Its two tasks are to expand the existing petrol relief scheme so more deserving people can benefit, and to prepare workable proposals for a phased reduction of the petroleum levy to be taken forward in the budget.
What it must recommend
The government members named are Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, and the Prime Minister's political adviser Rana Sanaullah. The JI members named are Deputy Emir Liaquat Baloch, Deputy Secretary General Syed Farasat Shah, and Islamabad Emir Nasrullah Randhawa.
The Prime Minister's Office briefing cited 12.7 million people registered under the existing relief scheme, which covers motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles of up to 800cc and was rolled out across the country on 17 September. JI had pressed for abolition of the petroleum levy; the committee's recommendations, not a levy decision, are what the meeting agreed.
