Grab Caps Vietnam Fees at 32% After Driver Protests

Ride-hailing firm Grab will cap the fees it keeps from each trip in Vietnam at 32% of what passengers pay, after a competition review prompted by driver complaints about falling earnings.

Vietnam's National Competition Commission, under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, announced the measures on 5 November. Its preliminary review followed complaints from drivers between late August and mid-September 2026 about low fares and deductions eating into their income. Some drivers had urged colleagues on social media to boycott the app for two days in September over falling take-home pay and opaque pricing.

Grab, the Singapore-based ride-hailing company, proposed six measures in response. From 10 November, its combined platform fee — charged to passengers — and flexible app-usage fee — deducted from drivers — will together be capped at 32% of the total passenger payment, excluding taxes and fees collected for third parties. Before the change, the combined take could reach 40.60% on GrabBike, its motorcycle service, and 39.81% on GrabCar.

After fees and taxes, GrabBike drivers will keep at least 60.59% of a trip and GrabCar drivers at least 59.68%, against a previous minimum of about 52%. Grab will also cut the platform fee by up to 2,000 dong on selected short-distance GrabBike and GrabCar trips from 10 November.

The company will refund about 3.9 billion dong (around US$152,000) to drivers, after its review found that about 0.13% of trips since 2024 had deductions above 35%, partly because of algorithm errors and supply-and-demand swings. In total, Grab plans to spend about VND2,950.9 billion (US$112 million) on fee cuts, driver refunds and incentives, and passenger promotions.

The commission said it will keep monitoring implementation, require Grab to report periodically, and consider action under competition and consumer-protection law if it finds signs of a breach.
