Greece-Cyprus Cable Dispute Resolved, Says Turkey

Turkey has said a dispute over survey work for a planned electricity cable between Greece and Cyprus has been resolved, a day after Ankara challenged the project with a rival maritime notice.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told the Greek newspaper Kathimerini on Saturday that the disagreement over the maritime notices was settled. "Everything is normal, everything is fine," he said, according to the report. He offered no details of any agreement, or of how the dispute had been resolved.
The row flared on Friday, when Greece and Cyprus published notices for the resumption of seabed surveys for the Great Sea Interconnector, a 1.9 billion euro project to link the electricity grids of Greece and Cyprus through Crete. Turkey issued a counter-notice, arguing that part of the survey area lies on its continental shelf and that the work needed Ankara's authorisation.
Greece rejected that claim. Greek diplomatic sources said the surveys would go ahead as planned under international law, and on Friday Greece completed the licensing procedures for the survey and cable-laying work. Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis signed the decision authorising the work after a positive recommendation from the committee responsible for marine research permits.
The French-flagged research vessel Abeille Marengo is expected to leave the port of Heraklion in Crete on Monday to resume surveys, heading for the waters south of the island of Kasos.
The interconnector, developed by Greece's grid operator IPTO, would connect Cyprus to the European electricity grid for the first time, with a possible extension to Israel later. Progress has repeatedly been slowed by the long-running dispute between Greece and Turkey over maritime zones in the eastern Mediterranean, which also flared into a sharp exchange at the United Nations Security Council last week.
