India completed a double at the inaugural Commonwealth Kabaddi Championship in Ahmedabad on Saturday, winning both the men's and women's finals on the same day.

The women's team won first, beating Uganda 35-15 in the final at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex. Sakshi top-scored for India with nine raid points from ten raids, including two bonus points, as India completed an unbeaten campaign of six wins from six matches.

Women lead the way in Ahmedabad

India had reached the women's final after a 39-14 semi-final win over Sri Lanka. In the group stage, they beat Malaysia, Singapore, Uganda and Nigeria to finish top of their group, before pulling clear of Uganda in the final.

India led 22-7 at half-time in the women's final after an all-out, and a second all-out late in the match put the result beyond doubt. The title made India the first women's champions in the history of the new tournament.

Men finish the double against Sri Lanka

The men's team then beat Sri Lanka 54-20 in their final to complete the double. India had beaten Bangladesh 56-27 in the semi-final and finished the tournament with eight wins from eight matches.

The championship was the first edition of the Commonwealth Kabaddi Championship, organised by the Amateur Kabaddi Federation of India. For the hosts, the double was a strong start for the new event, with both teams finishing unbeaten and winning their finals by clear margins in front of a home crowd in Ahmedabad.
