India's industrial output grows 6.7% in September

Manufacturing and power lead growth
India's industrial production grew by 6.7% year-on-year in September 2026, according to the Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on 28 October. The all-India IIP index stood at 124.3, compared with 116.5 in September 2025.
Manufacturing expanded by 7.6%, while electricity and gas supply recorded 11.2% growth. The figures are quick estimates and can be revised as additional production returns arrive, but they point to a broad-based industrial upturn in the month.
Services trial index shows retail strength
A new trial Index of Services Production (ISP) for August recorded particularly strong growth in retail trade, at 19.9%, followed by repair services and real estate, both at 17.6%, and banking at 14.9%. The trial index is designed to give a fuller picture of the services economy alongside the established industrial measure.
Together, the two releases offer a snapshot of an economy in which goods production and consumer-facing services both expanded in late summer, ahead of the festival season. The IIP figures will be updated as revised returns come in.
