Police have named the 92-year-old woman who died after being struck by a vehicle in Inverness city centre as Mary Jane Goodwin.

Mrs Goodwin was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash on Academy Street, near the railway station, at around 9.50am on Thursday, 29 October. She was walking on Academy Street when she was struck by the vehicle, according to the Press Association.

Police Scotland named Mrs Goodwin in an update published on 2 November, four days after the crash. The force said her next of kin have been informed, and her family have asked for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time.

Road closed for seven hours

Emergency services were called to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on Academy Street at around 9.50am on Thursday, 29 October. Mrs Goodwin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Academy Street was closed between Crown Road and Chapel Street for seven hours while officers carried out enquiries at the scene. The road reopened at 5pm on the day of the crash.

Sergeant Calum MacAulay, of the Roads Policing Unit, said: "Our sympathies remain with the family and friends of Mrs Goodwin, who have requested that their privacy be respected at this difficult time."

He added: "Our enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances, and we are continuing to appeal for anyone with information to please come forward."

Police appeal for witnesses

Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash, and have appealed for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who was in the Academy Street area on the morning of Thursday, 29 October, or who has dashcam or other footage from the area, is urged to contact police.

Academy Street runs through the centre of Inverness, close to the city's railway station, and the closure between Crown Road and Chapel Street shut a stretch of the city centre while the investigation was under way.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference 0879 of Thursday, 29 October, 2026.

Mrs Goodwin's death was first reported on the day of the crash, before she had been formally named. Police have now confirmed her identity, and the investigation into the full circumstances continues.

The enquiries are being carried out by Police Scotland's Roads Policing Unit, which investigates serious road collisions. Officers have not said when their investigation will conclude, and the police statement does not describe the vehicle involved in any further detail.

The naming ends the wait for the victim's identity to be confirmed, but the investigation into how the crash happened remains open, and police are still asking anyone who saw what happened to come forward.
