A massive fire ripped through a Quaker Oats plant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Saturday 24 October 2026 after an apparent explosion, with plumes of heavy smoke and flames seen on the north side of the plant. Firefighters were called at around 4:45 p.m. local time, and by around 6:25 p.m. most of the fire had been extinguished, though limited operations continued inside the building.

No injuries reported

All workers on site were able to evacuate safely and no injuries were reported, Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell said on Facebook. No firefighters were injured either. The fire broke out in an area of the plant that handles products and is not heavily populated with employees and team members, O'Donnell said, which she described as a blessing in the circumstances. How many workers were in the building when the blaze erupted remains unclear.

A staple of the town

The plant is described as the largest of its kind in the world, and as a staple of Cedar Rapids. A local witness, Dan Gardner, told KCRG that he felt terror, sadness and worry on seeing the plumes of smoke, adding that Quaker Oats is a staple of the town and that residents do not want to see it blow up. The reaction underlines how a factory fire can feel personal in a town where the plant is a major employer and landmark.

Cause still unknown

The cause of the fire and explosion remained unknown as of Saturday night, fire officials said. That is normal in the early hours of an industrial fire investigation, which must first make the building safe and then work through damaged areas. The Daily Byte will update this brief when fire officials confirm a cause or a damage assessment. Sources: New York Post; Cedar Rapids Fire Department; KCRG.
