Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezaei met Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei on Tuesday, a day after officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan, the countries behind the Mecca pact, held talks with Iranian officials in Tehran.

Talks follow Monday's meetings

The meeting between Rezaei and the Supreme Leader came after Monday's discussions in the Iranian capital, which brought together representatives of the Mecca pact countries and Iranian officials. No ceasefire was announced following either set of talks.

According to an Iranian official, nuclear issues were not discussed at Monday's meeting, keeping the focus on the ongoing war and the conditions under which it might end.

Iran's stated conditions

Khamenei stressed Iran's interests and set out conditions for ending the war, including an end to the United States blockade of Iranian ports and to sanctions on Iran's oil exports. The demands underline how far apart the sides remain, with sanctions and the blockade central to the pressure campaign against Tehran.

Diplomacy continues without a breakthrough

The sequence of meetings, first with the Mecca pact countries and then at the highest level in Tehran, shows diplomacy is active even as fighting continues. But with no ceasefire announced and Iran's conditions unmet, there is no sign yet of an imminent end to the war.

Further talks are expected as regional governments try to find a route towards de-escalation.
