Iran Lifts 2,000km Limit on Missile Range

Iran has lifted a self-imposed limit of about 2,000 kilometres on the range of its ballistic missiles, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Saturday, 7 November.

Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi, the Guard's spokesman, made the announcement at a press conference in Tehran marking IRGC Aerospace Week. Asked whether the restriction on missile range was still in place, he replied: "This restriction has been lifted for us." The remarks were reported by the Associated Press and by Iranian state-linked outlets including Tasnim, Mehr and ISNA.

The 2,000-kilometre ceiling was a limit Iran said it had imposed on itself, rather than a treaty obligation. It had stood for years as a public reassurance, notably to European states, that Tehran's missiles were not meant to reach beyond the region. Removing it signals what Iran now permits itself to pursue, at a moment of sharp tension with the United States and Israel.

Mohebbi attached an important caveat. He said Iran's capabilities should be demonstrated in practice, on the battlefield, rather than simply claimed in advance, and that work on extending range was continuing. No new missile model, test result or deployment was identified, and there is no evidence Iran currently has an operational ballistic missile able to fly beyond the former limit.

The remarks followed a warning from Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei that any threat against Iran should receive an immediate response without geographical limits. The announcement also came a day after the United States carried out limited strikes on Iranian air defences on Qeshm Island, in the Strait of Hormuz, which President Donald Trump described as minor.

What is confirmed is the change in stated policy, not a new weapon. Whether Tehran follows it with a test flight beyond 2,000 kilometres will be the real measure of what has changed.
