Iran rejects report of Hormuz-for-blockade deal with US as 'lies and fantasies'

An informed source has told the Tasnim News Agency that a report by Saudi-owned Al Arabiya claiming Tehran had offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the lifting of the US naval blockade was false, describing it as "lies and fantasies". The source said Iran will not accept any arrangement linking the strait to the blockade.

What Tehran says its position is

The source added that, like many of the Saudi media outlet's other reports about Iran, the claim was fabricated, and that Iran had not submitted any new proposal to Pakistani mediators. Iran's seven-point plan, which sets out the country's demands, had already been conveyed to the United States, the source said, and that plan remained Tehran's stated position. "Until all of Iran's legitimate demands are met, one of which is ending interference with Iran's ports and maritime shipping, the insecurity imposed by the American enemy in the Strait of Hormuz will not be eliminated," the source told Tasnim.

The wider standoff

The source further stressed that Iran will not accept speculation or media conjecture as a substitute for the position it had formally communicated through mediators, and said Iran was circumventing the blockade through its own methods and would ultimately break it. The denial comes as tensions remain high over the strait, a vital global energy chokepoint, with Washington pressing for freedom of navigation and Tehran insisting on its own authority to regulate shipping through it. The competing claims underline how much of the standoff is being fought through public statements as well as naval deployments.
