Ireland set record as England rout Wales in wheelchair

Ireland's record afternoon
Ireland broke their international points record and holders England made a powerful start to their title defence as the 2026 Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup opened in Wollongong on Friday.
Ireland beat the United States 110-10 in the opening match at WIN Entertainment Centre, while England later beat Wales 98-18 in the same Pool A group.
Ireland's previous Test record was 92 points against Scotland last year, but they passed that mark with ease against the USA. Captain Joseph Calcott scored seven tries, and Cian Horgan added six, as Ireland ran in 20 tries in total.
Ireland have won the annual three-nation Celtic Cup, contested with Wales and Scotland, for the past three years, and NRL.com described them as a renewed side since the 2022 World Cup. The USA now face England in round two on Tuesday.
Hawkins stars for England
England, the reigning champions after beating France in the 2022 final, led Wales only 18-12 after 20 minutes before pulling away to lead 46-12 at half-time. Rob Hawkins scored 11 tries and kicked four conversions for a personal haul of 52 points, earning the player of the match medal.
Nathan Collins scored four tries, including one after 90 seconds, and finished with 34 points. Wales scored through Sid Ramsey, who crossed twice, and Stuart Williams, but could not stay with the holders once England found their rhythm.
What comes next
England face the United States on Tuesday, while Ireland take on Wales earlier the same day. England are attempting to win back-to-back wheelchair World Cup titles, while Ireland's record-breaking opener suggests the holders will not be the only side capable of scoring heavily in Pool A.
