Definition: A major world religion followed by over two billion people (Muslims).

Definition: Followers of Islam

3. Islamism (The Political Ideology)

  Definition: Is a political movement designed to mobilize religion to achieve state power and reshape political systems.

4. Islamist 

Definition: A term used to describe a person or group who believes Islamic law (Sharia) must be the primary political, legal, and constitutional foundation of a country.

Many people around the world think Islam and Islamism are the exact same thing. They think both have the same views, morals, and rules. But the truth is simple: ISLAM HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ISLAMISM. Their views actually fight against each other. In fact, ISLAMISM IS BASED ON ACTIONS THAT ISLAM COMPLETELY BANS AND CALLS MAJOR SINS.  

Why They Contradict Each Other: To understand why they are different, look at the following examples:

SPIRITUAL VS POLITICAL:

●Islam: The primary goal of Islam is spiritual and ethical, focusing on a person’s relationship with God, personal salvation, moral character, and justice. THE QURAN DOES NOT PRESCRIBE A SPECIFIC BLUEPRINT FOR A MODERN NATION-STATE.

●Islamist View: Islamists reduce Islam primarily to a political, legal, and state system. Critics argue this represents a "politicization of the sacred," where capturing state power becomes more important than individual spiritual devotion.

Islam is all about spiritual devotion while Islamism totally ignores the fundamentals of Islam

 The text defines global human structures as natural vehicles for mutual recognition, not restrictive geopolitical entities:                      

                                   " O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and

                                      tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is 

                                      the most righteous of you."— Surah Al-Hujurat 49:13

When the Prophet (ﷺ) offered advice on cross-pollinating date palms that yielded poor results, he famously separated secular administrative wisdom from direct religious command:

                                          "You know better about your worldly affairs."— Sahih Muslim 2363

CONSULTATION VS AUTHORITARIANISM: 

●Islam: Traditional Islamic politics focuses on two main goals: Shura (talking things out together) and fairness. In the past, Islamic law was kept separate from political rulers. Instead, local judges (qadis) decided how to use the law in their own towns, which allowed for different opinions and flexible rules.

When sending Mu'adh bin Jabal to Yemen as a Qadi (judge), the Prophet (ﷺ) explicitly authorized independent reason over rigid codification:

                           The Prophet asked: "How will you judge...?" Mu'adh said: "According to Allah's Book." The Prophet asked:

                           "And if you do not find it there?" Mu'adh said: "According to the Sunnah." The Prophet asked: 

                           "And if you do not find it there?" Mu'adh replied: "I will exert my own opinion (Ijtihad)..." 

                           The Prophet patted his chest and said: "Praise be to Allah Who has helped the messenger of the

                            Messenger of Allah."— Sunan Abi Dawud 3592\

●Islamist View: Islamists want to use the modern government to force everyone to follow religious rules. This creates a strict system where the government controls how people pray, what they wear, and how they live their private lives. 

However, early Islamic governments in history never controlled people this way.

The Quran designates mutual consultation as an essential characteristic of a righteous community, setting a precedent against autocratic decree:

                             "...and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves..."— Surah Ash-Shura 42:38

The Absolute Ban on State Surveillance:

                              "O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption...  And do not spy or    

                               backbite each other..."— Surah Al-Hujurat 49:12

The Sanctity and Inviolability of Private Dwellings:

                               "O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain

                                welcome and greet their inhabitants..."— Surah An-Nur 24:27

When Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (RA) took office as the first Caliph, he codified this anti-authoritarian stance in his inaugural address:

                                "Cooperate with me if I do right, and correct me if I err... 

                                 Obey me only as long as I obey Allah and His Messenger."— Al-Bidayah wan-Nihayah

The Warning Against Top-Down Corruption of Citizens:

                                 The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "If you seek out the private faults of the people, 

                                  you will corrupt them or nearly corrupt them."— Sunan Abi Dawud 4888

PLURALISM VS MONOLITH:

●Islam: Islam has a 1,400-year history of different ideas about law and faith. Traditional Islam accepts four main Sunni legal groups and several Shia groups. They follow an old saying: "WHEN SCHOLARS DISAGREE, IT IS A BLESSING."

●Islamist View: Islamists usually reject these different historical ideas. They insist on just one strict and literal meaning of religious texts. They view Muslims who disagree with their political goals as lost, non-religious, or even non-Muslims. (This last act of kicking people out of the faith is a controversial practice called Takfir) 

Takfir Practice: They use a dangerous label to declare other Muslims as non-believers if they disagree. 

Islam STRICTLY FORBIDS individuals from casually accusing or labeling other self-professed Muslims as non-Muslims

 The Quran explicitly accommodates diverse human pathways, applications, and local methodologies rather than a singular monolithic system: 

                                 "...To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allah willed,

                                   He would have made you one nation [united under a single legal system]..."— Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:48

                                      

                                 "O you who have believed, when you go forth [to fight] in the cause of Allah,

                                  investigate; and do not say to one who gives you [a greeting of] peace,

                                  'You are not a believer,' aspiring for the goods of worldly life..." — Surah An-Nisa 4:94

   The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: 

                                    "When a man labels his [Muslim] brother a disbeliever, then it returns to one of them."

                                      — Sahih al-Bukhari 6103 & Sahih Muslim 60b.

NON-COERCION VS ENFORCEMENT:

●Islam: The Quran explicitly states, "There is NO COMPULSION in religion" (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:256), establishing that FAITH MUST BE A  MATTER OF FREE WILL and sincere conviction to be spiritually valid.

●Islamist View: Islamist  use force, strict laws, and religious police. They force people to do rituals, ban certain activities, and control how people act in public.   

THIS DIRECTLY BREAKS THE ISLAMIC RULE THAT SAYS FAITH CANNOT BE FORCED.

The Principle of Non-Compulsion:

                                  "There is no compulsion in religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong."

God Denies the Prophet the Right to Force People: 

                                 "And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed—all of them entirely. 

                                  Then, [O Muhammad], would you compel the people in order that they become believers?"

                                  — Surah Yunus 10:99

The Limited Role of Authority (Reminder, Not Enforcer):

                                  "So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder. You are not over them a controller."

                                   — Surah Al-Ghashiyah 88:21-22

WARFARE AND VIOLENCE: Strict Just-War vs. Ends-Justify-Means

●Islam: Traditional Islamic law has strict rules for war (Jihad). IT STRICTLY BANS ATTACKING CIVILIANS, DIPLOMATS, WOMEN, CHILDREN, AND HOUSES OF WORSHIP. It also states that only an official government leader can declare war.

●Islamist View (Militant Factions): Radical Islamist groups break these traditional laws by using terrorism and suicide bombings.

                       "...And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful."— Surah An-Nisa 4:29

They target and kill regular citizens and religious minorities. THEY FALSELY CLAIM THAT ISLAM ALLOWS THESE VIOLENT ACTS.

The Prohibition of Transgression: War is strictly defensive or targeted against active combatants, and crossing into civilian targeting is a direct sin:

                                 "Fight in the way of Allah those who fight you but do not transgress. Indeed. Allah does not

                                   like transgressors."— Surah Al-Baqarah 2:190

The Sanctity of Innocent Life: Killing a single non-combatant is textually equated to the slaughter of the entire human race:

                                 "..We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for 

                                  corruption [done] in the land—it is as if he had slain mankind entirely..."— Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:32

Protection of Diplomats and Envoys: The Quran mandates protecting emissaries, even if they represent an opposing faction in conflict:

                                  "And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that

                                   he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety."— Surah At-Tawbah 9:6

The Direct Ban on Killing Women and Children:

                                  During one of the military expeditions, a woman was found killed. Because of this,

                                  the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbade the killing of women and children.— Sahih al-Bukhari 3015

The Ban on Treachery and Mutilation:The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

                                 "Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah... Do not break your pledges, do not 

                                  mutilate bodies, and do not kill a newborn child."— Sahih Muslim 1731

Islamism is a political movement, not a religion, just like Zionism is a political movement. Islamism has nothing to do with true Islam. In fact, Islamists break all the rules of Islam, ignore its core morals, and use the religion's name for political power. Using religion for personal gain is completely banned in Islam. Islamism brainwashes people into thinking their violence is right, which is ethically, morally, and religiously wrong. While Islam is a peaceful religion full of love, Islamism is full of hatred, violence, and strict censorship. The hatred directed at Islam and Muslims today should actually be directed at Islamism.
