Newcastle United legend Kevin Keegan has been awarded the Freedom of Newcastle, the city's highest civic honour, in a historic posthumous tribute.

Councillors approved the honour at a special meeting of Newcastle City Council on Wednesday evening, 4 November 2026. Keegan becomes the first person in Newcastle's history to be granted the Freedom of the City posthumously.

Keegan died on 20 July 2026, aged 75, following a battle with cancer. His death prompted an enormous outpouring of grief across Newcastle and the wider footballing world, with fans leaving flowers, shirts and scarves outside St James' Park.

A tribute years in the making

Council leader Councillor Colin Ferguson, who represents the Gosforth area, had originally nominated Keegan for the award in June 2026. Keegan and his family were told the following month that he was to receive the honour, but he died before it could be considered in public and formally presented.

Ferguson said the award would serve as a lasting tribute to a man who meant so much to the city, and that Keegan's legacy would continue to inspire people for many years to come.

What the honour means

The Honorary Freedom of Newcastle is the highest civic distinction the council can award. Under the council's rules, approval requires at least two-thirds of councillors present at a specially convened meeting.

Following approval, Keegan's name will be permanently inscribed on the wall of the Civic Centre's Banqueting Hall, alongside fellow honorary freemen including Alan Shearer, Sir Bobby Robson, Jackie Milburn and, more recently, Eddie Howe. Supporters' tributes left at St James' Park were also put on public display at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art over the weekend of 31 October and 1 November.
