King to Lead Nation in Silence on Remembrance Sunday

By The Daily Byte ·08 Nov 2026 ·2 min read
The Cenotaph in Whitehall, London

The King will lead the nation in a two-minute silence at the Cenotaph in London today, as the UK marks Remembrance Sunday.

His Majesty will be joined by members of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister, senior politicians and faith representatives at the National Service of Remembrance on Whitehall. The service remembers those who have fallen and suffered in conflict, marking the Armistice of the First World War and all other conflicts involving British and Commonwealth forces.

Around 10,000 veterans will take part in the Royal British Legion's March Past the Cenotaph, with more than 300 different Armed Forces and civilian organisations represented. The national two-minute silence begins at 11am, marked by the firing of guns on Horse Guards Parade and the chimes of Big Ben, followed by the service and wreath laying.

Veterans and families at the heart of the day

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the day was a chance for the country to come together to honour those who served. He noted that, with the 15th anniversary of the end of the Iraq War marked earlier this year, many veterans will be reflecting on their experiences and the lasting impact of conflict.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said his family's war medals had helped shape his understanding of service and sacrifice.

Watching from home

While the country gathers, around 6,500 UK Armed Forces personnel remain deployed on operations and at overseas bases. For those unable to travel to London, the national event is being broadcast live on the BBC, ITV and Sky News, and members of the public can watch from designated viewing areas along Whitehall and Parliament Street without a ticket.
