LHC orders jail meeting for Noreen Niazi and daughters

The Lahore High Court has ordered that Noreen Niazi's two daughters be allowed to meet her in jail for one hour on Tuesday at 10 a.m., in the latest court development over the detention of the sisters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan. Justice Abher Gul Khan issued the order while hearing petitions filed by Sakina and Shahreiz challenging the extension of detention notifications for the sisters. The petitioners' lawyer is to submit an application to the Lahore deputy commissioner, who has been directed to arrange the meeting.
Deputy commissioner summoned
The court also summoned the Lahore deputy commissioner in person on 4 November over the extension of the detention notifications for Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan. Hearing on the extension of Aleema Khan's detention was adjourned until next week. The three women have been held under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance since September. Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan were initially detained for 30 days on 21 September, while Aleema Khan was taken into custody on 20 September, and the Punjab government later extended all three detentions by a further 30 days.
Health concerns raised in court
Punjab government's lawyer told the court Noreen Niazi had been treated at a hospital after developing heart-related complications at Kot Lakhpat jail and was transferred back to jail on doctors' instructions. Her daughter Hajra Niazi had met her on 29 October while she was receiving treatment. Petitioners argue the original 30-day detention period had expired before the deputy commissioner issued an extension notification on 7 October, and their lawyer told the court the women had spent 44 days behind bars despite having committed no offence.
