Two Seriously Hurt in 30-Vehicle M20 Fog Crash

The M20 motorway in Kent in fog

Two people have been seriously injured after more than 30 vehicles were involved in a crash in thick fog on the M20 in Kent.

Police said the collision happened on the London-bound carriageway near Hollingbourne, Maidstone, at around 6.41pm on Saturday. National Highways said there was thick fog in the area at the time, and the motorway remains closed in both directions between junctions 8 and 9.

Three fire engines and a technical rescue unit were sent to the scene, Kent Fire and Rescue Service said. Eleven people were passed to paramedics for treatment, and two of them were seriously injured and taken to hospital — one to a London hospital and the other to a hospital nearby.

Fog warning still in place

The Met Office has a yellow warning for fog in place until 10am on Sunday, covering a large part of southern England and the Midlands, with visibility falling to less than 50 metres in some places. Drivers have been told to avoid the area, with diversions in place while crews clear the scene and investigate.

Some drivers posting online said conditions around the time of the crash were hazardous, with fog appearing suddenly and traffic slowing to around 30mph. Others suggested smoke from a nearby fireworks display may have made visibility worse, although that has not been confirmed by police.

Police appeal

Kent Police have asked anyone with dashcam footage or information about the incident to contact them via live chat or by calling 101, quoting reference 07-1245. The motorway was expected to remain closed overnight.
