M20 Pile-Up: Two Seriously Hurt in 30-Vehicle Fog Crash

Two people were seriously injured after more than 30 vehicles were involved in a pile-up in thick fog on the M20 in Kent. Kent Police said the crash happened on the London-bound carriageway near Hollingbourne, Maidstone, at around 6.41pm on Saturday 7 November.
National Highways reported thick fog in the area at the time, and the motorway was closed in both directions between junctions 8 and 9 for several hours. Kent Fire and Rescue Service sent three fire engines and a technical rescue unit to the scene, while paramedics treated 11 people. Two of them were taken to hospital with serious injuries, one to a London hospital and the other to a local hospital.
Drivers described conditions changing suddenly, with one telling a local traffic page that the fog appeared without warning and that cars were slowing to around 30mph. Some people at the scene suggested smoke from a nearby fireworks display may have made visibility worse, though that has not been confirmed by police.
National Highways said both carriageways had reopened by around 5am on Sunday. A Met Office warning for fog remained in place until 10am on Sunday across a large part of southern England and the Midlands. Kent Police have asked anyone with dashcam footage or information about the crash to contact the force, quoting reference 07-1245.
