Malaysia Seizes $12.1m of AI Chips at Airport

Malaysian customs announced on 28 October 2026 the seizure of advanced AI chips worth about 49.5 million ringgit ($12.11 million) this month. On 15 October, officers found 30 server units containing advanced AI chips during an inspection in Kuala Lumpur International Airport's free trade zone, customs director Aspalila Ag Tuah told reporters.

Falsely declared servers

The servers were falsely declared as electronic components and were to be re-exported to another Asian country, requiring a trade permit. Customs said the shipment was routed through Malaysia so no restrictions would apply on export to the next destination.

A suspected smuggling network

The seizure is suspected to be the work of a network behind a similar attempt foiled in June. At least five cases are linked to the syndicate, with total seizures worth more than 100 million ringgit, according to customs. The director gave the inspection details to reporters at the announcement briefing.

Malaysia imposed export controls last year on advanced AI chips of US origin, following US pressure to stem their flow into China. Neither outlet names the origin country, the destination country, or the Malaysian firm called in to assist, and this post does not fill those gaps.
