Migrant Caravans Hopeful After US Midterm Results

Migrant caravans from Honduras and El Salvador are making their way towards the United States, encouraged by the Democrats' victories in the midterm elections on 3 November. Many of those travelling say they believe a Democratic majority in Congress will weaken President Donald Trump's border crackdown.
Two days after the results, the American Embassy in El Salvador posted a warning. "U.S. immigration laws remain in effect," the Spanish-language post read. "The midterm election results do not represent changes to current immigration policies." The message has not deterred the travellers. Dozens of Salvadorans set out on Friday from the Western Bus Terminal in San Salvador for Tecun Uman, on the Guatemala-Mexico border, where they plan to join a caravan that left Honduras on Election Day and is already moving through Guatemala.
Hope for an easier passage
"That's the hope," Beatriz M., travelling with her husband and her nine- and 11-year-old children from El Salvador, told CNN, "that we can make it to where we're going." Many in the caravans have made the journey before. Santiago, a Honduran man, told CNN he had been deported twice from the United States, while Juan, who lived in the US for 26 years before being deported on 15 September, joined the caravan after learning about it on social media.
Officials warn the border is closed
The group that left San Pedro Sula on 3 November is the third organised Honduran caravan since September, according to AFP. US officials have given no sign that the midterm results will change enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security has said there is "absolutely ZERO chance" the group will be allowed into the United States. The groups still face long journeys through Guatemala and Mexico, where earlier caravans have been stopped or dispersed.
