Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing down the curtain on a red-ball career that spanned 13 years and 64 matches.

Shami, 36, made the announcement on Friday 6 November through a video message on Instagram. The date carried special meaning for him: he received his Test cap on 6 November 2013, against West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, so his retirement came exactly 13 years after his debut.

A career built on seam and swing

Across 64 Tests, Shami took 229 wickets at an average of 27.71, with six five-wicket hauls and best figures of 6 for 56. He became one of India's most dependable fast bowlers, particularly away from home, where he claimed 145 wickets in 41 Tests. His final appearance in the format came in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval, and he has not played international cricket in any format since the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March 2025.

White-ball cricket continues

Shami made clear that he is not leaving the game altogether. He said he will continue to play white-ball cricket for India, as well as in the Indian Premier League and domestic cricket for Bengal, where he has been playing in the Ranji Trophy this season. He also left open the possibility of playing four-day domestic matches to stay fit.

The announcement followed his omission from India's Test squad for the series in New Zealand, with the selectors having questioned his match readiness in recent months. Shami thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Cricket Association of Bengal for their support throughout his career.
