Moldova Inaugurates Vulcanesti-Chisinau Power Line

High-voltage electricity pylons crossing the Moldovan countryside near Chisinau

Moldova has inaugurated the Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line, a major energy link designed to connect the country directly to Romania and end its dependence on electricity routed through the Transnistrian region.

President Maia Sandu attended the opening ceremony on Sunday alongside European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos and Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu. Sandu said the line meant that nobody could any longer blackmail the country by cutting off its electricity or heating.

The line runs for around 158 kilometres from Vulcanesti in the south to the capital, Chisinau, and allows electricity to be transmitted from Romania to central Moldova without passing through the Cuciurgan power plant in Transnistria. Construction of the line was completed in November 2025, followed by technical testing and safety checks, and the total value of the project is approximately €61 million.

Commissioner Kos said the project represented an important step towards ending Moldova's dependence on Russian energy and strengthening its connections with European networks. She is in Moldova from 8 to 10 November to discuss the country's progress on its path towards European Union membership and to advance regional cooperation on digital connectivity.

During the visit Kos is also meeting Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, Igor Grosu, and will address the Moldovan Parliament and speak at the Annual EU Enlargement Conference. The power line is one of the main investments in Moldova's energy infrastructure and is intended to diversify supply routes and increase the security of electricity transmission.
