Sweden's Andreas Almgren and Kenya's Sheila Chepkirui won the 2026 New York City Marathon on Sunday 1 November, in the 55th running of the race.

Men's race decided late

Almgren won on his marathon debut in 2:06:01, according to NBC Sports' results list, finishing ahead of Italy's Yemaneberhan Crippa in 2:06:14 and Lesotho's Kamohelo Mofolo in 2:06:26. Defending champion Benson Kipruto of Kenya was fourth. The result made Almgren the first Swedish winner of the race, on a five-borough course finishing in Central Park.

Women's race and late surge

Chepkirui won her second New York title in 2:24:36, ahead of American Jessica McClain in 2:24:42 and defending champion Hellen Obiri of Kenya in 2:24:43. McClain's late surge past Obiri in the closing metres gave the United States its first women's podium finish since 2018, according to USA Today.

Wheelchair races and scale

Switzerland's Marcel Hug won the men's wheelchair race in 1:28:14, just ahead of Daniel Romanchuk of the United States, while Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland won the women's wheelchair race in 1:40:02. The open race, held on the first Sunday in November, is one of the world's largest marathons, with tens of thousands of runners covering 42.195 kilometres through New York's five boroughs. For Almgren, a successful half-marathon runner, the debut victory capped a patient race in which the leading group stayed close until the closing stages.
