OpenAI Buys Pierre to Bring Code Storage to Codex

OpenAI has agreed to buy Pierre Computer Company, the small developer-tools startup behind Code Storage, in a deal designed to help its Codex coding tool cope with software written by AI agents. OpenAI announced the agreement on 4 November, saying Pierre's technology will be brought into Codex so developers and agents can work on ambitious projects side by side.

Code Storage is a hosted Git service built for AI applications rather than human programmers. It gives coding agents a place to store the code they generate, along with its version history, and it exposes the usual Git operations through an API and software kits. Pierre also builds two open-source libraries, Trees and Diffs, which already power the file browser and change reviewer inside the Codex application.

What happens next

Neither company disclosed a price, and the deal still needs customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval. Until it closes, OpenAI and Pierre will continue to operate as separate and independent businesses, according to CIO.

OpenAI said Code Storage customers will be able to keep using the service while its features are integrated into Codex, and Pierre's open-source projects will remain open source, with OpenAI continuing to contribute to them.

The acquisition follows OpenAI's recent unveiling of Pando, its in-house source-control backend, which was built to handle the volume of work created when many AI agents write code at once. The message from both moves is the same: as agents take on more coding, the storage and review layer underneath them has to keep pace. No closing date has been given, so the first visible change for Codex users is likely to be faster file browsing and change reviews once the integration lands.
