OpenAI has raised $11 billion so far in a new funding round that values the AI lab at $1.25 trillion, Bloomberg reported on Friday, in a deal that falls well short of the company's original ambitions. The $11 billion is part of a larger round that has not yet closed, and a source told Bloomberg it is expected to wrap up in the coming weeks and could total about $20 billion. In late September, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI was looking to raise $30 billion in the round, at a valuation of $1.4 trillion. OpenAI has not commented on the figures, which remain unconfirmed by the company.

A cooler reception for AI funding

The Wall Street Journal reported that the fundraising met with a "tepid" response from some large investors, and that SoftBank and MGX took part in the funding. OpenAI's last closed valuation was $852 billion, set in March. The mood music is echoed at its chief rival: TechCrunch noted that potential buyers of shares in Anthropic's IPO are eyeing a valuation as low as $1.1 trillion, against the roughly $2 trillion investors were said to be expecting a month ago. Both companies are finding that investors are now haggling hard over price.

The Democratic sweep in the US midterms, and voter anger over data centres, has raised the prospect of tougher regulation, while investors are openly questioning whether vast AI infrastructure spending will pay off. The smaller round suggests that even the biggest name in AI must now accept more disciplined terms from its backers.
